Steve Ryan, as Head Coach, draws upon his early years
of professional
play and 17 years of
coaching at the competitive CYSA Class-1 level to train,
motivate and inspire the boys both on and off the field.
Playing...
Steve Ryan started playing soccer at age 11 while growing up in
San Francisco. After graduating from Riordan HS Steve played at San
Francisco State University in 1975 and then at San
José State University from 1976 though 1979.
Steve was an All American in his senior year at SJSU and was named
to the All Far West
First Team.
In 1979 Steve was captain at the World
University Games which were held in Mexico that year.
In 1980 Steve was a member of the US
Olympic Soccer Team during the boycotted 1980 Olympic games in
Moscow.
After graduating from San
José State in 1979 Steve was drafted by the San Jose
Earthquakes where he played through 1982. During off-season
Steve played MISL (Major
Indoor Soccer League) for the Detroit Lightning.
In 1982 Steve played for the MISL New Jersey Rockets
and in 1983 for the California Surf.
Santa Clara Sporting
After retiring from professional play Steve played
with Santa Clara Sporting Club. While at SCSC Steve helped them win
back-to-back state championships and CSA North Amateur Cups in 1989
and 1990. In 1989 SCSC also won the Far West Regional
Championship and Steve was a US National Amateur finalist.
Coaching...
Steve began his coaching career in 1985 with Class-1 U15/U16
Boys. From '87 through '90 Steve coached De Anza Class-1 U13-U15
girls. In January of 1991 Steve's son Nicolas was born and it was clear
that coaching yet another competitive team of boys was just a matter of
time. Today, many years later, Steve is coaching his son Nic
along with the other dedicated and talented boys on the team.
Testimonials...
Perhaps one the finest testimonials to Steve comes from
Matt, one of the team's hardest-working midfielders:
"Coach Steve is a heck-a-good guy!"
Parents like Coach Steve because ALL
players now make their beds each day, turn in assignments on
time, get straight A's in school, treat their parents with respect,
play the piano, can identify the capitals and major rivers of the
world*, share willingly with their
younger siblings, eat from the 4 food groups, put on warm clothes
before going out on a cold day, save $.50 of every $1.00 towards
their college education, throw away empty boxes from the cupboard,
set the table, ........
